Hyundai Santa Fe (12 - present)
This generation of the Santa Fe now is more practical than ever. There is a lot of standard kit and it is an all-round fine car to drive. On the road it fares well. It has a really strong engine which produces plenty of torque even when in the low gears. The ride quality is smooth, quiet and, coupled with the comfortable cabin, makes driving it a grand experience. There is hardly any wind or road noise in the cabin either. The steering can feel a bit lifeless at times, but it is responsive enough. The only negative is that there is a fair bit of body roll on corners, but it wouldn’t be enough to put you off. When it comes to engine selection there is only one - the 2.2-litre CRDi. It’s an efficient, economic and capable engine. Pushing out 194bhp, 422nm and 311lb-ft of torque, it has a top speed of 118mph and can complete the benchmark 0-60 in 9.1 seconds. It emits only 155g/km of CO2, and returns 47 miles to the gallon.

• Spare wheels can be really expensive to replace
